Workman women come home, help run family biz

When Howard Workman formed his company in 1975, he hired a part-time secretary and felt a wave of responsibility. It was one thing to support himself and his family, but to support others as well?

Things worked out for Workman and soon Workman & Company, a full-service commercial real estate firm, was home to a dozen employees. Honey, Workman's wife, joined the firm in the early 1980s, and in the last few years, Workman's daughters, Cara and Robyn have signed on. When they did, that wave of responsibility returned. "[It's one thing] when you're helping other people make livings for their families," Workman says, "but when they're your children ..."

Workman always wanted Cara and Robyn to work in the family business, but he and his wife encouraged their daughters to pursue their own paths. If that meant working at Workman & Company, great. If not, they'd be supportive.

Growing up, Cara Workman, the elder sister, wasn't sure what she wanted to do. When they were kids, the Workmans took their children to volunteer with them at the William Breman Jewish Home, a senior-living facility. Cara
